THE BLACK MESSIAH

Duration 10’02 min
Mini DV/Standard Definition

This video shows a general mood in West Papua, which is full of contradictions between identities, faiths, myths, as well cargoism elements and symbols of Israel. The situation is a result of cultural and political marginalization of Papuans, which has occurred for decades under Indonesia’s nationalism.

Three main figures inside the video represent the dissatisfaction, discouragement, and their desire for independence. Nevertheless, the video shows a turning point on the last main figure, Pak Musa, a retired health associate, who in his youth saw political conflicts and massacres of Papuans. Instead, he shows a strong humanist attitude. On daily basis as a street preacher, he identifies himself as an Israeli but also with collective fates of Palestinians.
